The Ghyll House explores the rare opportunity to introduce a new dwelling within the grounds of an existing mid-20th century home near Cranbrook. Securing planning permission for a new house in this landscape is uncommon, which makes the proposal particularly special.
The new home sits within one of the paddocks that form part of the wider Roundhouse site, surrounded by mature trees, open grassland and a collection of small outbuildings including stables and artist studios.
The design takes inspiration from the natural character of the surrounding countryside. The building’s curved form reflects the gentle rolling hills of the High Weald, while the sweeping driveway follows a flowing line inspired by the movement of water across the landscape. Together these elements create a home that feels closely connected to its setting while introducing a distinctive new architectural form within the grounds.
