Cowden Farm is the transformation of a small cluster of agricultural buildings on the edge of Five Ashes. The site includes a farmhouse, holiday lets and a collection of barns that had gradually become underused or redundant over time.
The proposal converts the existing barns into four three- and four-bedroom homes, carefully reusing the agricultural structures while giving them a new purpose. Each home is arranged to take advantage of the open countryside views to the south, with private outdoor spaces and dedicated parking integrated into the layout.
Inside, the design takes inspiration from the character of traditional barns, creating large open-plan living spaces with high ceilings and exposed structural elements. Mezzanine levels and roof terraces introduce additional living areas while making the most of the generous roof heights and surrounding views.
Externally, the buildings retain their simple agricultural form while introducing contemporary materials, glazing and carefully detailed openings to bring light into the interiors. The result is a collection of homes that preserve the working character of the farmstead while giving the buildings a new life.
