Furnace Oast rethinks a converted oast and barn to better suit modern family life while preserving the character of the existing building. The original layout placed the living room within the roundel, but the kitchen and dining space felt compact and did not take advantage of the south-facing views.
The proposal introduces a new extension and a reorganised ground floor that creates a generous kitchen, dining and living area connected to the garden and patio, alongside the extra spaces needed for family life. Upstairs, the design improves bedroom arrangements, including a main bedroom within the roundel.
A separate outbuilding is also proposed, providing flexible guest accommodation with a bedroom, shower room and a small kitchen and living area. Externally, materials such as brick, clay tiles and timber detailing reflect the rural character of the original buildings while new glazing introduces a subtle contemporary touch
